When a crowd favorite comes to town (center)

Zagreb has some amazing restaurants, without a doubt. Over the past years many new eatiers opened its doors, which also urged some of Zagreb food institutions to step up their game. The more you have, the more you want and in order to survive in this competitive battle for the last foodie, restaurateurs are (more or less successfully) rising to the occasion. One of the former is definitely Rougemarin.

What started off as one of the first gourmet burger places in Zagreb, situated in an old light bulb factory, became one of the most-frequented places in town. Present-day Rougemarin offers much more than burgers (although their weekly specials are always a delight!). What’s keeping the place among one of the busiest bistros both during lunch and dinner is the comprehensive and playful menu. Some of their crowd pleasers are ever-present, like the thick-crusted Sicilian-style pizza and the flavorful and colorful stir-fries (a veggie one, too) with noodles or rice, while the rest of the carte changes on a monthly basis.

Start off with a fun cheese plate or a hearty soup before you dive into a fresh tuna steak, a succulent tenderloin or marinated duck breasts. You’ll always find a creamy risotto and some homemade fresh pasta dish there, too. Pair it up with a glass of fine wine or a pint of cold craft beer and there you have it – instant happiness.

If the pulled pork sandwiches and the tender bass fillets just don’t cut it for you, Rougemarin still serves you damn fine burgers. Get out of your comfort zone and opt for the Weekly special – you won’t be disappointed.

As much as we truly enjoy soaking up the sun on the large terrace in Folnegovićeva street during the warmer months, we’ve welcomed the news from the chef Marin Medak with open arms. In the heart of Zagreb’s city center, right off the main square Rougemarin City just opened its doors.

The concept which made the bistro one of the most praised eateries in town remained the same and so did the menu. Meaning, you can now enjoy their comfort food at two different locations, so no need for long drives anymore! Since Rougemarin city is just a few doors from Zagreb’s beloved street food institution Mundoaka, there will definitely be some coin-tossing going on when deciding on a place to eat. Whichever one you choose, don’t forget to make a reservation. Bon appétit!
